The American Kennel Club's pedophile problem

The mother contacted the American Kennel Club, the organization that oversees most dog shows in the country. The AKC helps local kennel clubs enforce rules about conduct and animal treatment. The bulk of the organization's income comes from the dog-show community, in the form of event and registration fees paid by local kennel clubs and breeders. The debate is taking place as kennel clubs try to entice younger children to show dogs. Many dog shows include competitions for junior handlers, including a "Pee Wee" division for kids under the age of 10.

CNN —When special counsel Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court to reject former President Donald Trump’s immunity claims there was an unmistakable hue of urgency to the request. It could grant Trump’s request and then hold arguments and decide the merits of the immunity issue – perhaps on an expedited basis. The Supreme Court can move quickly, at least by judicial branch standards. George Walker IV/APThe Supreme Court denied that request, allowing the appeals court to review the case first. The Supreme Court cleared the way on Thursday for a $2.4 billion plan to settle sex abuse lawsuits against the Boy Scouts of America to go forward. The court’s brief, unsigned order gave no reasons, which is typical for emergency applications. There were no public dissents. A group of victims had asked the court to pause the plan as the justices consider an opioid settlement against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, and the members of the wealthy Sackler family who owned it, because that deal raised similar issues. Like the Purdue Pharma deal, the Boy Scouts agreement was settled in bankruptcy court using a contentious mechanism that insulates a third party from future lawsuits even without requiring that party to declare bankruptcy.

Growing up, I was the opposite of a jock; I was an artsy kid with a limp wrist. But in my adult life, something shocking has happened: I've become one of the most athletic people I know. But what started as a casual interest in hiking and cycling has reached athletic proportions in recent years. I've since turned to cyclingWhat allowed me to claw out of that rut was, again to my surprise, an athletic activity: cycling. I'm not sure how many mountains I need to summit or miles I need to ride before it feels right.

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments Dec. 4 over whether the agreement, part of the resolution of Purdue Pharma's bankruptcy, violates federal law. She initially opposed the deal with Purdue Pharma but has come around. The Purdue Pharma settlement would be among the largest. But in the decade before that, they were paid more than $10 billion, about half of which family members said went to pay taxes. The department and Purdue Pharma forged a plea bargain in a criminal and civil case.

Mr. Sunderland’s fascination with maps began at a young age. “His uncle had a map of Lancashire [England] and he could see all the little towns and villages,” Ms. Sunderland-Cohen said. And I think maps are just such an amazing expression of that.”The plan now, she said, is to keep the collection intact, but to share it with a wider audience. “There is an incredibly broad range of people around the world who are interested in maps because they’re such extraordinary objects,” she said. And then there are actual map experts, who look at where they sit in the history of European cartography, and what you can tell from different versions of atlases, and the very nitty-gritty scholarship side.”

Mark Eaton in ‘Scout’s Honor’ Photo: NetflixThe Boy Scouts of America declared bankruptcy in 2020 in the face of a child-sexual-abuse scandal that, in terms of scale, was larger than that of the Roman Catholic Church. Or so it is claimed at the outset of “Scout’s Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America.” Yes, the Scouts taught skills and virtues to many boys: how to be thrifty, brave, clean and reverent; how not to pitch a tent at the bottom of a hill. At the same time, “It was all just veneer, to mask what was a very dangerous organization.”

A customer service representative later explained to me by phone that we had been reimbursed for only the New York to Savannah leg. The Boy Scouts' three-year Chapter 11 bankruptcy case resulted in the largest sexual abuse settlement fund in U.S. history and resolves claims by more than 80,000 men who say they were abused as children by troop leaders, according to the organization. The Boy Scouts settlement was supported by 86% of abuse claimants and the Boy Scouts' two largest insurers, which funded a large part of the settlement. The Boy Scouts organization was able to emerge from bankruptcy after the Philadephia-based 3rd U.S. Money for the settlement comes from the Boy Scouts, local councils, insurers and organizations that have chartered Scouting units and activities, including churches. The Boy Scouts organization has contributed additional insurance rights to the settlement fund, which may be worth as much $4 billion, according to court documents.
April 19 (Reuters) - The Boys Scouts of America said on Wednesday it had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after securing approval of a $2.46 billion reorganization plan from a bankruptcy judge in September. The organization had filed for bankruptcy in February 2020 after several U.S. states enacted laws allowing accusers to sue over decades-old abuse allegations. Beep! The barcode turns 50, who invented it?

The barcode, that rectangle of thick and thin parallel lines seen on seemingly every grocery product, package, prescription bottle and piece of luggage is turning 50 years old. There’s hardly any products now that don’t use a barcode for identification.”Who got there first? A replica of a package of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum used in a Smithsonian museum exhibition. The Wall Street Journal, in a 2022 obituary of Collins, gives the nod of inventing the barcode to him. Years later, the Smithsonian had a replica of that Wrigley’s gum installed in a museum exhibition on the history of the barcode.
[1/2] The statue of a scout stands in the entrance to Boy Scouts of America headquarters in Irving, Texas, February 5, 2013. More than a dozen insurers, including Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, have said the Boy Scouts' bankruptcy settlement puts them on the hook for paying "thousands of invalid and questionable claims." The Boy Scouts settlement, approved in bankruptcy court in September, was supported by 86% of abuse claimants and the Boy Scouts' two largest insurers. The Boy Scouts organization said Friday it would oppose any effort to delay bankruptcy exit. The Boy Scouts filed for bankruptcy in February 2020 after several U.S. states enacted laws allowing accusers to sue over decades-old abuse allegations.
March 28 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Tuesday affirmed the Boy Scouts of America's $2.46 billion settlement of decades of sex abuse claims, rejecting appeals by some of the group's insurers and abuse claimants. The Boy Scouts settlement, approved in bankruptcy court in September, was supported by 86% of abuse claimants and the Boy Scouts' two largest insurers. The Boy Scouts organization said it was "enormously grateful" to abuse survivors who spoke out about their experiences and who voted to support the settlement. The judge rejected insurers' appeals that argued the Boy Scouts organization colluded with abuse claimants to shift liability to insurers. The Boy Scouts also contributed additional insurance rights, which may be worth more than $4 billion, to the fund will pay abuse claims, according to Andrews' ruling.

“That was absolutely idiotic,” the employee, who works on the asset management side of Silicon Valley Bank, told CNN in an interview. By the close of business that day, Silicon Valley Bank had a negative cash balance of about $958 million. “People are just shocked at how stupid the CEO is,” the Silicon Valley Bank insider said. “There should be no mistaking that Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse was a direct result of the Fed’s persistent and excessive interest rate hikes,” they wrote. Of course, Silicon Valley Bank had more than a year to prepare for both of those issues.

'Romeo & Juliet' stars sue over teen nude scene in 1968 film

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were just teenagers when they electrified audiences in the 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The film was a hit and was nominated for four Academy Awards, but it also stirred controversy over a bedroom scene which included images of Whiting’s buttocks and Hussey’s bare breasts. Now in their 70s, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, accusing Paramount of sexually exploiting them and distributing nude images of adolescent children. The suit alleges that he was being dishonest and that Whiting and Hussey were in fact filmed nude without their knowledge. In a 2018 interview with Variety, Hussey defended the nude scene.
The Boy Scouts, for instance, said on a website the group set up for restructuring that it launched a “comprehensive noticing campaign” in the media. He sought compensation in the Boy Scouts bankruptcy in June, long after a deadline of November 16, 2020 for filing claims. The Boy Scouts bankruptcy reorganization plan, approved by a judge in September, halts all lawsuits against the Boy Scouts, local councils, churches and other organizations that chartered scouting activities. His case was halted by the Boy Scouts bankruptcy. Later that year, in August, he filed his lawsuit against defendants including a Boy Scouts local council and DeSandre.

Thomas Lauria runs the bankruptcy team at White & Case where clients have included Hertz and Johnson & Johnson. But Lauria told Insider that the ability of crypto companies to reorganize will depend on whether they have any real assets. Notably, when Lauria represented Hertz in its Chapter 11 case during the coronavirus pandemic, even its unsecured creditors were repaid in full. So I'm not sure that what's happening in crypto right now is really going to be a reorganization boom, but really probably more of a liquidation boom. About $10 billion of Hertz debt, when they filed, was related to financing in connection with their US fleet.
